Before I dive into the blogging pool I’d like to introduce myself and the blog. I am an architect in Berkeley, California with a great love of designing houses. After working for other architects for a dozen years I started my own firm in early 2003. I run a one-person business, and that’s the way I like it. I get to wear many kinds of hats, which adds to the fun.
Outside of work my greatest passion is tennis. I play singles at least twice a week, and though I’m not getting any faster, I love that there is always more to learn. Come to think of it, the same could be said about architecture. It’s a game for life.
Architecture is part art, part science, mostly craft, and sometimes innovation. I like to discover new solutions to various parts of the design puzzle. How to make better use of space in a not-so-big house. How to make our homes greener—using less energy and water, building with renewable resources, getting away from toxic materials. How to make houses more adaptable, flexible, and remodelable. How to combine coziness with spaciousness and light.
This blog will be a place to share my discoveries and areas I’m exploring. Sometimes a place to think out loud, and ask what you think on a topic. I hope to start a dialog with you and encourage you to leave comments. To react, ask questions, and share information. I hope to provide information and inspiration, and I expect to be learning from you too.
